Reader: Bless the Lord who forgives all our sins.

All:         His mercy endures forever.

Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord.

Amen.

The confession

All: Most merciful God, we confess to you, before the whole company of heaven and one another, that we have sinned in thought, word and deed and in what we have failed to do.

Forgive us our sins, heal us by your Spirit and raise us to new life in Christ. Amen.

A Collect for the second Sunday after Epiphany

Almighty God, whose Son our Savior Jesus Christ is the light of the world: Grant that your people, illumined by your Word and Sacraments, may shine with the radiance of Christ’s glory, that he may be known, worshiped, and obeyed to the ends of the earth; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, now and for ever.

Amen.

The Word of God.  One or more readings appointed for the day are read.

A reading from 1 Samuel 3:1-20

1The boy Samuel ministered before the Lord under Eli. In those days the word of the Lord was rare; there were not many visions.  2One night Eli, whose eyes were becoming so weak that he could barely see, was lying down in his usual place.  3The lamp of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was lying down in the house of the Lord, where the ark of God was.  4Then the Lord called Samuel.  Samuel answered, “Here I am.”  5And he ran to Eli and said, “Here I am; you called me.”  But Eli said, “I did not call; go back and lie down.” So he went and lay down.  6Again the Lord called, “Samuel!” And Samuel got up and went to Eli and said, “Here I am; you called me.”  “My son,” Eli said, “I did not call; go back and lie down.”  7Now Samuel did not yet know the Lord: The word of the Lord had not yet been revealed to him.  8A third time the Lord called, “Samuel!” And Samuel got up and went to Eli and said, “Here I am; you called me.”  Then Eli realized that the Lord was calling the boy.  9So Eli told Samuel, “Go and lie down, and if he calls you, say, ‘Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.’”  So Samuel went and lay down in his place.  10The Lord came and stood there, calling as at the other times, “Samuel! Samuel!”  Then Samuel said, “Speak, for your servant is listening.”  11And the Lord said to Samuel: “See, I am about to do something in Israel that will make the ears of everyone who hears about it tingle.  12At that time I will carry out against Eli everything I spoke against his family — from beginning to end.  13For I told him that I would judge his family forever because of the sin he knew about; his sons blasphemed God, and he failed to restrain them.  14Therefore I swore to the house of Eli, ‘The guilt of Eli’s house will never be atoned for by sacrifice or offering.’”  15Samuel lay down until morning and then opened the doors of the house of the Lord.  He was afraid to tell Eli the vision, 16but Eli called him and said, “Samuel, my son.”  Samuel answered, “Here I am.”  17“What was it he said to you?”  Eli asked. “Do not hide it from me.  May God deal with you, be it ever so severely, if you hide from me anything he told you.”  18So Samuel told him everything, hiding nothing from him.  Then Eli said, “He is the Lord; let him do what is good in his eyes.”  19The Lord was with Samuel as he grew up, and he let none of Samuel’s words fall to the ground.  20And all Israel from Dan to Beersheba recognized that Samuel was attested as a prophet of the Lord.

The Psalm appointed for today is Psalm 63:1-8

1You, God, are my God, earnestly I seek you; I thirst for you, my whole being longs for you,

in a dry and parched land where there is no water.

2I have seen you in the sanctuary and beheld your power and your glory.

3Because your love is better than life, my lips will glorify you.

4I will praise you as long as I live, and in your name I will lift up my hands.

5I will be fully satisfied as with the richest of foods; with singing lips my mouth will praise you.

6On my bed I remember you; I think of you through the watches of the night.

7Because you are my help, I sing in the shadow of your wings.

8I cling to you; your right hand upholds me.

Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning is now and shall be forever. Amen.

A reading from 1 Corinthians 6:11-20

11And that is what some of you were.  But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.  12“I have the right to do anything,” you say — but not everything is beneficial.  “I have the right to do anything” — but I will not be mastered by anything.  13You say, “Food for the stomach and the stomach for food, and God will destroy them both.”  The body, however, is not meant for sexual immorality but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body.  14By his power God raised the Lord from the dead, and he will raise us also.  15Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ himself?  Shall I then take the members of Christ and unite them with a prostitute?  Never!  16Do you not know that he who unites himself with a prostitute is one with her in body?  For it is said, “The two will become one flesh.”  17But whoever is united with the Lord is one with him in spirit.  18Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a person commits are outside the body, but whoever sins sexually, sins against their own body.  19Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God?  You are not your own; 20you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.

The Word of the Lord

Thanks be to God

The gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John 1:43-51

43The next day Jesus decided to leave for Galilee.  Finding Philip, he said to him, “Follow me.”  44Philip, like Andrew and Peter, was from the town of Bethsaida.  45Philip found Nathanael and told him, “We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law, and about whom the prophets also wrote — Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.”  46“Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?” Nathanael asked.  “Come and see,” said Philip.  47When Jesus saw Nathanael approaching, he said of him, “Here truly is an Israelite in whom there is no deceit.”  48“How do you know me?” Nathanael asked.  Jesus answered, “I saw you while you were still under the fig tree before Philip called you.”  49Then Nathanael declared, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the king of Israel.”  50Jesus said, “You believe because I told you I saw you under the fig tree.  You will see greater things than that.”  51He then added, “Very truly I tell you, you will see ‘heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending on’ the Son of Man.”

A Collect for the first Sunday after Epiphany

Father in heaven, who at the baptism of Jesus in the River Jordan proclaimed him your beloved Son and anointed him with the Holy Spirit: Grant that all who are baptized into his Name may keep the covenant they have made, and boldly confess him as Lord and Savior; who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, in glory everlasting.

The Word of God.  One or more readings appointed for the day are read.

A reading from Isaiah 42:1-9

1“Here is my servant, whom I uphold,  my chosen one in whom I delight; I will put my Spirit on him, and he will bring justice to the nations.  2He will not shout or cry out, or raise his voice in the streets.  3A bruised reed he will not break, and a smoldering wick he will not snuff out.  In faithfulness he will bring forth justice; 4he will not falter or be discouraged till he establishes justice on earth.  In his teaching the islands will put their hope.”  5This is what God the Lord says — the Creator of the heavens, who stretches them out, who spreads out the earth with all that springs from it, who gives breath to its people, and life to those who walk on it: 6“I, the Lord, have called you in righteousness; I will take hold of your hand.  I will keep you and will make you to be a covenant for the people and a light for the Gentiles, 7to open eyes that are blind, to free captives from prison and to release from the dungeon those who sit in darkness.  8“I am the Lord; that is my name!  I will not yield my glory to another or my praise to idols.  9See, the former things have taken place,   and new things I declare; before they spring into being I announce them to you.”

The Psalm appointed for today is Psalm 89:20-29

20I have found David my servant; with my sacred oil I have anointed him.

21My hand will sustain him; surely my arm will strengthen him.
22The enemy will not get the better of him; the wicked will not oppress him.

23I will crush his foes before him and strike down his adversaries.

24My faithful love will be with him, and through my name his horn will be exalted.

25I will set his hand over the sea, his right hand over the rivers.

26He will call out to me, ‘You are my Father, my God, the Rock my Savior.’

27And I will appoint him to be my firstborn, the most exalted of the kings of the earth.

28I will maintain my love to him forever, and my covenant with him will never fail.

29I will establish his line forever, his throne as long as the heavens endure.

Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning is now and shall be forever. Amen.

A reading from Acts 10:34-38

34Then Peter began to speak: “I now realize how true it is that God does not show favoritism 35but accepts from every nation the one who fears him and does what is right.  36You know the message God sent to the people of Israel, announcing the good news of peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all.  37You know what has happened throughout the province of Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John preached — 38how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and how he went around doing good and healing all who were under the power of the devil, because God was with him.

The gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark 1:7-11

7And this was his message: “After me comes the one more powerful than I, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie.  8I baptize you with water, but he will baptize you with[b] the Holy Spirit.”  9At that time Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan.  10Just as Jesus was coming up out of the water, he saw heaven being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove.  11And a voice came from heaven: “You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.”

O God, who wonderfully created, and yet more wonderfully restored, the dignity of human nature: Grant that we may share the divine life of him who humbled himself to share our humanity, you Son Jesus Christ; who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

A reading from Jeremiah 31:7-14

7This is what the Lord says: “Sing with joy for Jacob; shout for the foremost of the nations.  Make your praises heard, and say, ‘Lord, save your people, the remnant of Israel.’  8See, I will bring them from the land of the north and gather them from the ends of the earth.  Among them will be the blind and the lame, expectant mothers and women in labor; a great throng will return.  9They will come with weeping; they will pray as I bring them back.  I will lead them beside streams of water on a level path where they will not stumble, because I am Israel’s father, and Ephraim is my firstborn son.  10“Hear the word of the Lord, you nations; proclaim it in distant coastlands: ‘He who scattered Israel will gather them and will watch over his flock like a shepherd.’  11For the Lord will deliver Jacob     and redeem them from the hand of those stronger than they.  12They will come and shout for joy on the heights of Zion; they will rejoice in the bounty of the Lord — the grain, the new wine and the olive oil, the young of the flocks and herds.  They will be like a well-watered garden, and they will sorrow no more.  13Then young women will dance and be glad, young men and old as well.  I will turn their mourning into gladness; I will give them comfort and joy instead of sorrow.  14I will satisfy the priests with abundance, and my people will be filled with my bounty,”  declares the Lord.

The Psalm appointed for today is Psalm 84:1-8

1How lovely is your dwelling place, Lord Almighty!

2My soul yearns, even faints, for the courts of the Lord; my heart and my flesh cry out for the living God.

3Even the sparrow has found a home, and the swallow a nest for herself, where she may have her young — a place near your altar, Lord Almighty, my King and my God.

4Blessed are those who dwell in your house; they are ever praising you.

5Blessed are those whose strength is in you, whose hearts are set on pilgrimage.

6As they pass through the Valley of Baka, they make it a place of springs; the autumn rains also cover it with pools.

7They go from strength to strength, till each appears before God in Zion.

8Hear my prayer, Lord God Almighty; listen to me, God of Jacob.

Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning is now and shall be forever. Amen.

A reading from Ephesians 1:3-6, 15-19

3Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ.  4For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight.  In love 5he predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will — 6to the praise of his glorious grace, which he has freely given us in the One he loves.   15For this reason, ever since I heard about your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all God’s people, 16I have not stopped giving thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers.  17I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better.  !8I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people, 19and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is the same as the mighty strength

The gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke 2:41-52

41Every year Jesus’ parents went to Jerusalem for the Festival of the Passover.  42When he was twelve years old, they went up to the festival, according to the custom.  43After the festival was over, while his parents were returning home, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem, but they were unaware of it.  44Thinking he was in their company, they traveled on for a day.  Then they began looking for him among their relatives and friends.  45When they did not find him, they went back to Jerusalem to look for him.  46After three days they found him in the temple courts, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions.  47Everyone who heard him was amazed at his understanding and his answers.  48When his parents saw him, they were astonished.  His mother said to him, “Son, why have you treated us like this?  Your father and I have been anxiously searching for you.”  49“Why were you searching for me?” he asked.  “Didn’t you know I had to be in my Father’s house?”  50But they did not understand what he was saying to them.  51Then he went down to Nazareth with them and was obedient to them.  But his mother treasured all these things in her heart.  52And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man.

Apostles’ Creed

All: I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.  I believe in Jesus Christ, his only son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead.  I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

All:         My Jesus, I believe You are present in the most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive you sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.

A Collect for the first Sunday after Christmas

Almighty God, you have poured upon us the new light of your incarnate Word: Grant that this light, enkindled in our hearts, may shine forth in our lives; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.

Amen.

The Word of God.  One or more readings appointed for the day are read.

A reading from Isaiah 61:10-62:3

10I delight greatly in the Lord; my soul rejoices in my God.  For he has clothed me with garments of salvation and arrayed me in a robe of his righteousness, as a bridegroom adorns his head like a priest, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.  11For as the soil makes the sprout come up and a garden causes seeds to grow, so the Sovereign Lord will make righteousness and praise spring up before all nations.  1For Zion’s sake I will not keep silent, for Jerusalem’s sake I will not remain quiet, till her vindication shines out like the dawn, her salvation like a blazing torch.  2The nations will see your vindication, and all kings your glory; you will be called by a new name that the mouth of the Lord will bestow.  3You will be a crown of splendor in the Lord’s hand, a royal diadem in the hand of your God.

The Word of the Lord

Thanks be to God

The Psalm appointed for today is Psalm 147:13-20

13He strengthens the bars of your gates and blesses your people within you.

14He grants peace to your borders and satisfies you with the finest of wheat.

15He sends his command to the earth; his word runs swiftly.

16He spreads the snow like wool and scatters the frost like ashes.

17He hurls down his hail like pebbles.  Who can withstand his icy blast?

18He sends his word and melts them; he stirs up his breezes, and the waters flow.

19He has revealed his word to Jacob, his laws and decrees to Israel.

20He has done this for no other nation; they do not know his laws. Praise the Lord.

Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning is now and shall be forever. Amen.

A reading from Galatians 3:23-25, 4:4-7

23Before the coming of this faith, we were held in custody under the law, locked up until the faith that was to come would be revealed.  24So the law was our guardian until Christ came that we might be justified by faith.  25Now that this faith has come, we are no longer under a guardian.  4:4But when the set time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, 5to redeem those under the law, that we might receive adoption to sonship.  6Because you are his sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, “Abba, Father.”  7So you are no longer a slave, but God’s child; and since you are his child, God has made you also an heir.

The gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to St. John 1:1-18

1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.  2He was with God in the beginning.  3Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.  4In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind.  5The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.  6There was a man sent from God whose name was John.  7He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all might believe.  8He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light.  9The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world.  10He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him.  11He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. 12Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God — 13children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.  14The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us.  We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.  15(John testified concerning him.  He cried out, saying, “This is the one I spoke about when I said, ‘He who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.’”)  16Out of his fullness we have all received grace in place of grace already given.  17For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. 18No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son, who is himself God and[b] is in closest relationship with the Father, has made him known.

Amen.

The Word of God.  One or more readings appointed for the day are read.

A reading from 2 Samuel 7:4, 8-16

4But that night the word of the Lord came to Nathan, saying: 8“Now then, tell my servant David, ‘This is what the Lord Almighty says: I took you from the pasture, from tending the flock, and appointed you ruler over my people Israel.  9I have been with you wherever you have gone, and I have cut off all your enemies from before you.  Now I will make your name great, like the names of the greatest men on earth.  10And I will provide a place for my people Israel and will plant them so that they can have a home of their own and no longer be disturbed.  Wicked people will not oppress them anymore, as they did at the beginning 11and have done ever since the time I appointed leaders over my people Israel. I will also give you rest from all your enemies.  “‘The Lord declares to you that the Lord himself will establish a house for you: 12When your days are over and you rest with your ancestors, I will raise up your offspring to succeed you, your own flesh and blood, and I will establish his kingdom.  13He is the one who will build a house for my Name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.  14I will be his father, and he will be my son.  When he does wrong, I will punish him with a rod wielded by men, with floggings inflicted by human hands.  15But my love will never be taken away from him, as I took it away from Saul, whom I removed from before you.  16Your house and your kingdom will endure forever before me; your throne will be established forever.’”

The Psalm appointed for today is Psalm 132:8-15

8‘Arise, Lord, and come to your resting place, you and the ark of your might.

9May your priests be clothed with your righteousness; may your faithful people sing for joy.’”

10For the sake of your servant David, do not reject your anointed one.

11The Lord swore an oath to David, a sure oath he will not revoke: “One of your own descendants I will place on your throne.

12If your sons keep my covenant and the statutes I teach them, then their sons will sit on your throne for ever and ever.”

13For the Lord has chosen Zion, he has desired it for his dwelling, saying,

14“This is my resting place for ever and ever; here I will sit enthroned, for I have desired it.

15I will bless her with abundant provisions; her poor I will satisfy with food.

Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning is now and shall be forever. Amen.

A reading from Romans 16:25-27

25Now to him who is able to establish you in accordance with my gospel, the message I proclaim about Jesus Christ, in keeping with the revelation of the mystery hidden for long ages past, 26but now revealed and made known through the prophetic writings by the command of the eternal God, so that all the Gentiles might come to the obedience that comes from faith— 27to the only wise God be glory forever through Jesus Christ! Amen.

The gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to St. Luke 1:26-38

26In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, 27 to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David.  The virgin’s name was Mary.  28The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored!  The Lord is with you.”  29Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be.  30But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God.  31You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus.  32He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High.  The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, 33and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom will never end.”  34“How will this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?”  35The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you.  So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God.  36Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be unable to conceive is in her sixth month.  37For no word from God will ever fail.”  38“I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered.  “May your word to me be fulfilled.”  Then the angel left her.

God, I stand before You just as I am: a person with impatience and intemperance, with guilt and sorrow, with greed and hostility, with envy and resentments, with doubts and failures, and with pride and worldly attachments.  God, I lay these at the foot of the Cross. Accept me, forgive me, and restore me, through the suffering, the blood, and the resurrection of Your Son. Amen.

A reading from Isaiah 65:17-25

17“See, I will create new heavens and a new earth.  The former things will not be  remembered, nor will they come to mind.   18But be glad and rejoice forever in what I will create, for I will create Jerusalem to be a delight and its people a joy.   19I will rejoice over Jerusalem and take delight in my people; the sound of weeping and of crying will be heard in it no more.   20“Never again will there be in it an infant who lives but a few days, or an old man who does not live out his years; the one who dies at a hundred will be thought a mere child; the one who fails to reach a hundred will be considered accursed.   21They will build houses and dwell in them; they will plant vineyards and eat their fruit.   22No longer will they build houses and others live in them, or plant and others eat.  For as the days of a tree, so will be the days of my people; my chosen ones will long enjoy the work of their hands.   23They will not labor in vain, nor will they bear children doomed to misfortune; for they will be a people blessed by the Lord, they and their descendants with them.   24Before they call I will answer; while they are still speaking I will hear.   25The wolf and the lamb will feed together, and the lion will eat straw like the ox, and dust will be the serpent’s food.  They will neither harm nor destroy on all my holy mountain,” says the Lord.

The Psalm appointed for today is Psalm 126

1When the Lord restored the fortunes of Zion, we were like those who dreamed.
2Our mouths were filled with laughter, our tongues with songs of joy.  Then it was said among the nations, “The Lord has done great things for them.

3The Lord has done great things for us, and we are filled with joy.

4Restore our fortunes, Lord, like streams in the Negev.

5Those who sow with tears will reap with songs of joy.

6Those who go out weeping, carrying seed to sow, will return with songs of joy, carrying sheaves with them.

Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning is now and shall be forever. Amen.

A reading from 1 Thessalonians 5:12-28

12Now we ask you, brothers and sisters, to acknowledge those who work hard among you, who care for you in the Lord and who admonish you.  13Hold them in the highest regard in love because of their work. Live in peace with each other.  14And we urge you, brothers and sisters, warn those who are idle and disruptive, encourage the disheartened, help the weak, be patient with everyone.  15 Make sure that nobody pays back wrong for wrong, but always strive to do what is good for each other and for everyone else.  16Rejoice always, 17 pray continually, 18give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.

19Do not quench the Spirit.  20Do not treat prophecies with contempt 21but test them all; hold on to what is good, 22 reject every kind of evil.  23May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through.  May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.  24The one who calls you is faithful, and he will do it.   25Brothers and sisters, pray for us.  26Greet all God’s people with a holy kiss.  27I charge you before the Lord to have this letter read to all the brothers and sisters.  28 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.

The gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to St. John 1:6-8, 19-28

6There was a man sent from God whose name was John.  7He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all might believe.  8He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light.  19Now this was John’s testimony when the Jewish leaders in Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him who he was.  20He did not fail to confess, but confessed freely, “I am not the Messiah.”  21They asked him, “Then who are you? Are you Elijah?”  He said, “I am not.”  “Are you the Prophet?”  He answered, “No.”

22Finally they said, “Who are you? Give us an answer to take back to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?”  23John replied in the words of Isaiah the prophet, “I am the voice of one calling in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way for the Lord.’”  24Now the Pharisees who had been sent 25questioned him, “Why then do you baptize if you are not the Messiah, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?”  26“I baptize with water,” John replied, “but among you stands one you do not know.  27He is the one who comes after me, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie.”  28This all happened at Bethany on the other side of the Jordan, where John was baptizing.

Nicene Creed

All: We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.  We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.  He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.  We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshipped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

The confession

God, I stand before You just as I am: a person with impatience and intemperance, with guilt and sorrow, with greed and hostility, with envy and resentments, with doubts and failures, and with pride and worldly attachments.  God, I lay these at the foot of the Cross. Accept me, forgive me, and restore me, through the suffering, the blood, and the resurrection of Your Son. Amen.

All: Most merciful God, we confess to you, before the whole company of heaven and one another, that we have sinned in thought, word and deed and in what we have failed to do.

Forgive us our sins, heal us by your Spirit and raise us to new life in Christ. Amen.

A Collect for the second Sunday of Advent

Merciful God, who sent your messengers the prophets to preach repentance and prepare the way for our salvation: Give us grace to heed their warnings and forsake our sins, that we may greet with joy the coming of Jesus Christ our Redeemer; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.

Amen.

The Word of God.  One or more readings appointed for the day are read.

A reading from Isaiah 40:1-11

1Comfort, comfort my people, says your God.  2Speak tenderly to Jerusalem, and proclaim to her that her hard service has been completed, that her sin has been paid for, that she has received from the Lord’s hand double for all her sins.  3A voice of one calling: “In the wilderness prepare the way for the Lord; make straight in the desert a highway for our  God.  4Every valley shall be raised up, every mountain and hill made low; the rough ground shall become level, the rugged places a plain.  5And the glory of the Lord will be revealed,    and all people will see it together.  For the mouth of the Lord has spoken.”  6A voice says,  “Cry out.”  And I said, “What shall I cry?”  “All people are like grass, and all their faithfulness is like the flowers of the field.  7The grass withers and the flowers fall,     because the breath of the Lord blows on them.  Surely the people are grass.  8The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God endures forever.”  9You who bring good news to Zion, go up on a high mountain.  You who bring good news to Jerusalem, lift up your voice with a shout, lift it up, do not be afraid; say to the towns of Judah, “Here is your God!”  10See, the Sovereign Lord comes with power, and he rules with a mighty arm.  See, his reward is with him, and his recompense accompanies him.  11He tends his flock like a shepherd: He gathers the lambs in his arms and carries them close to his heart; he gently leads those that have young.

The Word of the Lord

Thanks be to God

The Psalm appointed for today is Psalm Psalm 85:7-13

7Show us your unfailing love, Lord, and grant us your salvation.

8I will listen to what God the Lord says; he promises peace to his people, his faithful servants — but let them not turn to folly.

9Surely his salvation is near those who fear him, that his glory may dwell in our land.

10Love and faithfulness meet together; righteousness and peace kiss each other.

11Faithfulness springs forth from the earth, and righteousness looks down from heaven.

12The Lord will indeed give what is good, and our land will yield its harvest.

13Righteousness goes before him and prepares the way for his steps.

Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning is now and shall be forever. Amen.

A reading from 2 Peter 3:8-15, 18

8But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day.  9The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness.  Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.  10But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything done in it will be laid bare.  11Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be?  You ought to live holy and godly lives 12as you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming.  That day will bring about the destruction of the heavens by fire, and the elements will melt in the heat.  13But in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, where righteousness dwells.  14So then, dear friends, since you are looking forward to this, make every effort to be found spotless, blameless and at peace with him.  15Bear in mind that our Lord’s patience means salvation, just as our dear brother Paul also wrote you with the wisdom that God gave him.  18But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and forever! Amen.

The gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to St. Mark 1:1-8

1The beginning of the good news about Jesus the Messiah, the Son of God, 2as it is written in Isaiah the prophet: “I will send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way” — 3“a voice of one calling in the wilderness, ‘Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him.’”  4And so John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.  5The whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem went out to him.  Confessing their sins, they were baptized by him in the Jordan River.  6John wore clothing made of camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey.  7And this was his message: “After me comes the one more powerful than I, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie.  8I baptize you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”

Service for Sunday November 29th, 2020 - Advent I - Year B

Zoom link for online access to service at 10:00 a.m. for Advent I - Year B - November 29th:- https://zoom.us/j/7860586161?pwd=b2VaTm5zcktRYjJvYnJSUW9rYzhJdz09

What is Advent?

Advent is the first season of the Church year. It lasts for four weeks leading up to Christmas Day on December 25:

Why is it called “Advent”?

“Advent” comes from the Latin adventus, meaning “coming or arrival.”

Used by the Church, the word refers to:

1.  The “arrival” of Jesus Christ when he was born on the original Christmas Day

2.  The upcoming “arrival” of Jesus Christ when, as Christians believe, he will return to judge the living and the dead.

So, the season of Advent is a season of preparation and waiting:

1.  first for Christ’s second coming to judge the living and the dead (2 Pet 3:11-14; 1 John 3:2-3), but also

2.  to celebrate Christ’s first arrival at Christmas.

Just as the Israelites awaited a Messiah to fulfill God’s promises from Genesis 3:15 to Jeremiah 31:31-34 and beyond, so Christians await the return of Jesus the Messiah to make all things new (Revelation 21).

The Advent wreath and candles

The candles also have their own special significance. The four candles represent the four weeks of Advent, and one candle is lit each Sunday. Three of the candles are purple because the color violet is a liturgical color that signifies a time of prayer, penance, and sacrifice.

Reader:    Our help is in the name of the Lord

All:            Who has made heaven and earth

Leader:     Let us pray.  O God, by whose word all things are made holy, pour forth your blessings upon this holy season, and grant that we who celebrate it may prepare our hearts for the coming of Christ.

All:            Amen.

Leader:     The Lord is our faith and our life.

All:             May the Lord’s peace be with us all.

Reader:      And may His love shine in ur hearts.

All:              Our hope is in the coming of the Lord.

The first candle, which is purple, symbolizes hope. It is sometimes called the “Prophecy Candle” in remembrance of the prophets, especially Isaiah, who foretold the birth of Christ. It represents the expectation felt in anticipation of the coming Messiah.

Reader:      Let us pray that our faith may be strengthened for the coming of the Lord.

One candle is lit.

Reader:      Father in heaven, our hearts desire the warmth of Your love, and our minds are searching for the light of Your Word.  Increase our longing for Christ our Saviour and give us the strength to grow in our faith so that the day of His coming may fins us prepared and filled with joy.

A Collect for the first Sunday of Advent

Almighty God, give us grace to cast away the works of darkness, and put on the armor of light, now in the time of this mortal life in which your Son Jesus Christ came to visit us in great humility; that in the last day, when he shall come again in his glorious majesty to judge both the living and the dead, we may rise to the life immortal; through him who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.

Amen.

The Word of God.  One or more readings appointed for the day are read.

A reading from Isaiah 64:1-9

1Oh, that you would rend the heavens and come down, that the mountains would tremble before you!  2As when fire sets twigs ablaze and causes water to boil, come down to make your name known to your enemies and cause the nations to quake before you!  3For when you did awesome things that we did not expect, you came down, and the mountains trembled before you.  4Since ancient times no one has heard, no ear has perceived, no eye has seen any God besides you, who acts on behalf of those who wait for him.  5You come to the help of those who gladly do right, who remember your ways.  But when we continued to sin against them, you were angry.  How then can we be saved?  6All of us have become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags; we all shrivel up like a leaf, and like the wind our sins sweep us away.  7No one calls on your name or strives to lay hold of you; for you have hidden your face from us and have given us over to our sins.

8Yet you, Lord, are our Father.  We are the clay, you are the potter; we are all the work of your hand.  9Do not be angry beyond measure, Lord; do not remember our sins forever.  Oh, look on us, we pray, for we are all your people.

The Word of the Lord

Thanks be to God

The Psalm appointed for today is Psalm 80:1-7

1Hear us, Shepherd of Israel, you who lead Joseph like a flock.

You who sit enthroned between the cherubim, shine forth 2before Ephraim, Benjamin and Manasseh.  Awaken your might; come and save us.

3Restore us, O God; make your face shine on us, that we may be saved.

4How long, Lord God Almighty, will your anger smolder against the prayers of your people?

5You have fed them with the bread of tears; you have made them drink tears by the bowlful.

6You have made us an object of derision to our neighbors, and our enemies mock us.

7Restore us, God Almighty; make your face shine on us, that we may be saved.

Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning is now and shall be forever. Amen.

A reading from 1 Corinthians 1:1-9

1Paul, called to be an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and our brother Sosthenes,

2To the church of God in Corinth, to those sanctified in Christ Jesus and called to be his holy people, together with all those everywhere who call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ — their Lord and ours: 3Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.  4I always thank my God for you because of his grace given you in Christ Jesus.  5For in him you have been enriched in every way — with all kinds of speech and with all knowledge — 6God thus confirming our testimony about Christ among you.  7Therefore you do not lack any spiritual gift as you eagerly wait for our Lord Jesus Christ to be revealed.  8He will also keep you firm to the end, so that you will be blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.  9God is faithful, who has called you into fellowship with his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

The gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to St. Mark 13:24-37

24“But in those days, following that distress, “‘the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; 25the stars will fall from the sky, and the heavenly bodies will be shaken.’  26“At that time people will see the Son of Man coming in clouds with great power and glory. 27And he will send his angels and gather his elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of the heavens.  28“Now learn this lesson from the fig tree: As soon as its twigs get tender and its leaves come out, you know that summer is near.  29Even so, when you see these things happening, you know that it is near, right at the door.  30Truly I tell you, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened.  31Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.  32“But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. 33Be on guard!  Be alert!  You do not know when that time will come.  34It’s like a man going away: He leaves his house and puts his servants in charge, each with their assigned task, and tells the one at the door to keep watch.  35“Therefore keep watch because you do not know when the owner of the house will come back — whether in the evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or at dawn.  36If he comes suddenly, do not let him find you sleeping.  37What I say to you, I say to everyone: ‘Watch!’”

Reader:  Lord, we beseech you mercifully to hear the prayers of your people who call upon you; and grant that they may both perceive and know what things they ought to do, and also may have grace and power faithfully to fulfil them; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.

All:              And also with you.

Reader: Uniting our prayers with the whole company of heaven, let us pray with confidence as our Saviour has taught us:-

All:        Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.

Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever and ever.

Amen.

Reader:  At this time when as a church family we would normally be celebrating the Eucharist together, let us now say this prayer of Saint Alphonsus as an act of spiritual communion.

Amen.

All:         And blessed be His kingdom, now and forever.  Amen.

Amen.

A Collect for Proper 29

Almighty and everlasting God, whose will it is to restore all things in your well-beloved Son, the King of kings and Lord of lords: Mercifully grant that the peoples of the earth, divided and enslaved by sin, may be freed and brought together under his most gracious rule; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.

Amen.

The Word of God.  One or more readings appointed for the day are read.

A reading from Ezekiel 34:11-17

11“‘For this is what the Sovereign Lord says: I myself will search for my sheep and look after them.  12As a shepherd looks after his scattered flock when he is with them, so will I look after my sheep.  I will rescue them from all the places where they were scattered on a day of clouds and darkness.  13I will bring them out from the nations and gather them from the countries, and I will bring them into their own land.  I will pasture them on the mountains of Israel, in the ravines and in all the settlements in the land.  14I will tend them in a good pasture, and the mountain heights of Israel will be their grazing land.  There they will lie down in good grazing land, and there they will feed in a rich pasture on the mountains of Israel.  15I myself will tend my sheep and have them lie down, declares the Sovereign Lord.  16I will search for the lost and bring back the strays. I will bind up the injured and strengthen the weak, but the sleek and the strong I will destroy. I will shepherd the flock with justice.  17“‘As for you, my flock, this is what the Sovereign Lord says: I will judge between one sheep and another, and between rams and goats.

The Psalm appointed for today is Psalm 95:1-7

1Come, let us sing for joy to the Lord; let us shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation.

2Let us come before him with thanksgiving and extol him with music and song.

3For the Lord is the great God, the great King above all gods.

4In his hand are the depths of the earth, and the mountain peaks belong to him.

5The sea is his, for he made it, and his hands formed the dry land.

6Come, let us bow down in worship, let us kneel before the Lord our Maker;

7for he is our God and we are the people of his pasture, the flock under his care.

Today, if only you would hear his voice!

Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning is now and shall be forever. Amen.

A reading from 1 Corinthians 15:20-28

20But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep.  21For since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead comes also through a man.  22For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive.  23But each in turn: Christ, the firstfruits; then, when he comes, those who belong to him.  24Then the end will come, when he hands over the kingdom to God the Father after he has destroyed all dominion, authority and power.  25For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet.  26The last enemy to be destroyed is death.  27For he “has put everything under his feet.”  Now when it says that “everything” has been put under him, it is clear that this does not include God himself, who put everything under Christ.  28When he has done this, then the Son himself will be made subject to him who put everything under him, so that God may be all in all.

The gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to St. Matthew 25:31-46

31“When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne.  32All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats.  33He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left.  34“Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world.  35For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’  37“Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink?  38When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you?  39When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’  40“The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’  41“Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.  42For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, 43I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.’  44“They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’  45“He will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’  46“Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.”
